Letter S Polymer Clay Alphabet Cane Tutorial

Here is another free step-by-step tutorial as part of a series of articles on making letter canes. Click here for a list of all of the other alphabet canes so far. Today’s letter is not super-hard to create. The letter shape itself is actually pretty simple, so the trickiest bit is the shaping of the triangular pieces that go onto the sides of the cane.

Step-by-step instructions: Letter “S” polymer clay alphabet cane

You will need:

Step 0: Condition the clay

Step 1 – Roll the black clay into a sheet approx. 1.5mm thick (usually the middle setting of a pasta machine):

Step 2 – Cut off about a sixth of the white block of clay and save that piece to use later:

Step 3 – Roll the larger piece of white clay into a log approximately 15cm (6ins) long:

Cut canes in half again

Step 4 – Cut that log in half down the middle:


Step 5 – Cut those logs in half again:


Step 6 – Stand the logs on end, as shown below:

Step 7– Wrap the black clay from Step 1 around two of the canes as shown below. Trim off any excess black clay.:

Step 8 – Pinch the two remaining white canes into teardrop shapes:

Step 9 – Pinch and stretch the two white canes into wide triangles:

Step 10 – Assemble the cane pieces:

Step 11 – Using the smaller piece of white clay from Step 2, roll it through the pasta machine on the thinnest setting and then wrap it around the sides of the letter cane:

Step 12 – Reduce the cane.
