This is part of a series of articles on how to create letter canes with polymer clay. Click here to start with “A”, or click here for a list of all of the other alphabet canes so far. This is the letter I alphabet cane tutorial (which is the second-easiest letter to create!)

You will need:

  • Approximately 30g white polymer clay (i.e. half a standard-sized block of clay)
  • Approx. 8g black polymer clay (about one sixteenth of a standard block of clay)
  • Pasta machine or clay roller
  • Tissue blade (a.k.a. polymer clay slicer blade)

Step-by-step instructions: Letter “I” polymer clay alphabet cane

Step 0: Condition the clay (by rolling it through the pasta machine until it forms very flexible sheets.)

Step 1: Cut off around a third of the white clay, and put it aside for now to work with the larger white piece first:

Cut off a third of the white polymer clay block
Keep a third of the clay to use later.

Step 2: Roll the larger white clay block into a cylinder with a diameter approximately 2.5cm (1 inch) wide:

Step 3: Roll the black clay into a sheet around 2mm thick, using the pasta machine. (The setting for 2mm thick is usually the middle setting of the pasta machine):

Step 4: Cut the white cylinder in half down the middle:

Cut the polymer clay cane down the middle
Cut the cane in two.

Step 5: Insert one layer of the black sheet of clay between the two halves of the white cylinder. Cut off any excess black clay:
