Step-by-step instructions: Letter “M” polymer clay alphabet cane

You will need:

  • Approx. 30g white polymer clay (i.e. half a standard-sized block of clay)
  • Approx. 8g black polymer clay (about an eighth of a standard block)
  • Pasta machine or clay roller
  • Tissue blade (a.k.a. polymer clay slicer blade)

Step 0: Condition the clays (i.e. roll each colour separately through the pasta machine on the thickest setting about ten times until it is very flexible)

Step 1: Cut off around a third of the white clay and put it aside for now in order to work with the larger white piece first.

Step 2: Using the pasta machine, roll the black clay into a sheet approximately 2mm thick (e.g. using the middle setting of the pasta machine).

Step 3: Using the larger block of white clay, roll it into a cylinder with a diameter of approximately 2.5 cm (1 inch) tall, with about a 2.5 cm diameter.

Step 4: Cut off the sides of the cylinder (starting from approximately one sixth of the way in from the left and right edges). Keep these pieces to one side, to use later:

Step 5: Starting from the top corners of the white cylinder, cut a “V”-shaped wedge out of the top of the cane, and keep it aside to use later:

Step 6: Cover the flat sides of the white cane with one layer of the black sheet of clay. Trim off any excess black clay.

Step 8: Using the smaller white piece of clay that was set aside in Step 1, roll it through the pasta machine on the thinnest setting and then wrap the thin white sheet around the outside of the cane.
