Here is the letter “U” polymer clay alphabet cane tutorial. (Click here for a list of all of the other alphabet canes so far.) The letter U is a fairly quick and easy letter to create in cane form – it’s nice and symmetrical and just involves two cuts.

Step-by-step instructions: Letter “U” polymer clay cane

You will need:


Step 0: Condition the clay.


Step 1 – Roll the black clay into a sheet approx. 1.5mm thick (usually the middle setting of a pasta machine):

Step 2 – Cut off around a third of the white block of clay and save that piece to use later:

Step 3 – Roll the larger piece of white clay into a cylinder approx. 25mm (1 inch) in diameter, and about 25mm tall:

Step 4 – Slice two pieces from the sides of the cylinder (about one sixth of the way in from each edge) and keep the side pieces for later:

Step 5 – Gently squeeze the bottom end of the shape to make it more rounded :

Step 6 – Using the sheet of black clay (from Step 1) cover the sides and bottom of the rounded shape with one layer of the black clay. Trim off any excess black.:

Step 7– Replace the two side pieces from Step 4 as shown below:

Step 8 – Using the piece of white clay from Step 2, roll it through the pasta machine on the thinnest setting to make a thin sheet, then wrap these thin layers of white around the sides of the cane:

Step 9 – Reduce the cane.
